In Western culture the transition from adolescence into adulthood is punctuated by rituals both discreet and taken for granted. For example, at a given time we are expected to choose a certain area of studies with the goal to, in a foreseeable future, manage to get into a certain profession that will allow us to be seen as socially valid elements able to perform a certain function. As a consequence, questioning the "rules of the social game" head-on is perceived as a strange behavior. The film by the Brazilian Gabriel Martins denounces the silent social pressure imposed on individuals, more precisely on adolescents. Bia – played by the young rapper Clara Lima – refuses to give in quietly to the rules imposed by institutions like school or family. She insists she doesn’t want to do a thing and everyone surrounding her is left in astonishment, not knowing how to deal with her resolution. The confrontation and the spirit of protestation of rap culture are qualities that this "rapper turned actress" carries with her to the front of the camera. "Nada" (Nothing) is a cry out over how important it is to respect individuality and the need to guarantee the necessary room for self-discovery in a society that grows more and more frenetic and hasty.
