Janie Geiser – an American avant-garde all-round artist and filmmaker – presents her work at Curtas Vila do Conde for the third time, following "Arbor" (2012) and "Cathode Garden" (2015). In a stimulant way "Flowers of the Sky" is a film that explores the pictorial and narrative layers of two photographs found at a thrift shop in the city of Los Angeles, documenting two meetings between the members of a 19th century North American Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star. By analyzing these photographs in detail, fragmenting them through a kind of slit, Geiser proposes a deterritorialization of the photographs, choosing to artistically intervene in a visual and vocal incantatory performance-like experience where images are manipulated by the agglutination and overlapping of various elements. As in some of her previous works, the exercise of exploring the archival image and its potential for artistic reinvention – both rational and unconscious - stands out in this piece. (PC)
