With some of the style of Ossang's early works - crime, the force of destruction as a polarizing idea, the fragmented montage – "L'Affaire des Divisions Morituri" is the director’s final project while attending IDHEC. The tone is dark, of a post-apocalyptic world, where urban gladiators of punk aesthetic appear, living in a dimension outside the normal world. However, there is a police chase, remains of a "traditional" cinema and also of a violent state practice. The film also enters the European youth rebellion subconscious, resulting from the death of several of the most important members of the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion/Red Army Faction, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group). Ossang thus enters a political domain present in all his filmography, creating a punk aesthetic, in which the narrative serves as driving force of the creative and violent impulses of the film itself. This is also evident in the slogans – that repeatedly appear on screen – but also in the music, coming from several of the most radical bands of those times: MKB Fraction Provisoire (one of Ossang's own bands), Cabaret Voltaire, Tuxedomoon, Throbbing Gristle and Lucrate Milk. The industrial landscape of the ports is recurrent (as in other films), placing "L'Affaire des Divisions Morituri" in a dirty and decadent aesthetic. For this very reason, death is one of the driving forces of the film, a kind of possible regeneration for the human species. (DR)
