In a sort of summary of his work, "Silencio" is a silent road movie, accompanied by the music of Throbbing Gristle and several intertitles. This black-and-white journey through a rural and atlantic Portugal is starred by a mysterious woman (in fact, it is her companion, Elvire, who also stars in the feature films "Docteur Chance" and "Dharma Guns"), in a purely poetic style, broken by the biting Gristle music and the intertitles words, which lead us to an almost apolitical side. This short film demonstrates the strong visual tendency present in his work, from delicate photography, a look into the landscape that forces us to feel the dialectic of historical time: between that which is ancestral and the constructions of man. This dialectic is felt in the film as an eschatological development, which also leads us to a melancholy between the beauty of the images and the inevitable destruction of human life. "Silence" was screened in the Directors' Fortnight at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and won the Prix Jean-Vigo, that same year, in the short film category. (DR)
