New readings of history and cinema, presented by Spanish directors Samuel M. Delgado and Helena Girón. After featuring in the Curtas Festival in 2015 and 2016 with “Sin Dios Ni Santa María” and “Montañas Ardientes que Vomitam Fuego”, they return to Vila do Conde with their latest work, “Plus Ultra”. Shot on film in the Canary Islands – the testing ground for the colonial strategy in America – this short film focuses on the arrival of Spanish explorers in a new land. In fact, Plus Ultra, meaning further beyond, is Spain’s national motto, a clear reference to the nation’s expansionist ambitions. However, in their experimental approach, Delgado and Girón move beyond historical facts to subvert the dominant, official account. The fictional construction of history and cinema therefore merges in the same reality. "How do we get out of here?" we hear, watching defeated, exhausted men carrying the sails of their ships, engaged in an adventure that will never be anything but inglorious. (AJM)
