Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca's short film shows Brazil fuelled by a public debate dominated by the recent evangelical wave. As a result, “Terremoto Santo” focuses on the aesthetic, economic and social aspects of Gospel music produced and performed by a young generation of believers who live in the region of Zona da Mata, in Pernambuco, known for its sugarcane plantations and, up until 1980, divided between Catholics and Afro-Brazilian religions. The directorial duo focuses on this younger generation, namely their relationship with the moral, ethical and aesthetic elements of their religious practice and their relationship with space, media, pop culture and desire. The liturgy of the evangelical worship is extremely musical and is performed by young people who seek a new form of labour through singing. “Terremoto Santo” is a musical that observes the gestures and the voice of these people who see in the Evangelic religion a new form of economic and spiritual entrepreneurship. Bárbara Wagner is a visual artist and director and collaborates with Benjamin de Buca on a regular basis.
