A series of white figures set against a black background emerge as ghosts or indistinct creatures. A continuous, fast flow of abstract forms follow in rapid succession, appearing and disappearing, growing and diminishing, becoming transfigured between the organic and the geometric. Flowing at the speedy rhythm of the music that accompanies them, these forms get involved in a dance that becomes almost hypnotic and that carries us to far-off places – those of our imagination. We are invited to take part in a game revolving around the ambiguity of the images, whose formal simplicity heightens their power of suggestion. Josh Lewis is an experimental artist and filmmaker, born in Hong Kong and working in New York. His work is at the intersection of abstraction, documentary, and narrative. His handmade films, exploring the potential of cinema as matter, have been presented at several exhibition spaces and film festivals. This year, he is presenting his work at Curtas Vila do Conde for the first time. (RM)
