“At The Horizon” begins and ends with a view of the horizon, which is multiplied and transformed during the film by digital animation. The real image – a kind of cosmic rainstorm – is used as the backdrop for a mass of lines which meet and intersect, creating geometric shapes which gradually form an elastic web that is permanently under construction. The electronic soundtrack, which accentuates the idea of mechanical repetition and could have been taken from a science fiction film, intensifies the effect of spatiality also suggested by the flow of moving images. “At The Horizon” was created by two artists: the Austrian Manuel Knapp, who returns to Vila do Conde for the third time, and Japanese filmmaker Makino Takashi, making his first appearance here. Knapp has been working in the field of visual arts and electronic music, whilst Takashi’s art involves combining the principles of surrealist collage with the techniques of multiple exposure: rejecting the synchronisation of image and sound, he has collaborated with various musicians in his endeavour to create unexpected encounters.
