Just as they appear in their first films from the time of silent cinema, Mary Pickford and Janet Gaynor are the protagonists of this collage by Stacey Steers. By appropriating those images, combining them with cuttings of typical 19th-century engravings, and employing the handmade craft of auteur animation films shot on 35mm – something which, although not yet extinct, is no longer the most common practice – the filmmaker develops a device that is very close to surrealism: two realities intersect each other in an organic, intuitive way, weaving a story that otherwise would not even find its own time or shape. The process of constructing the film, which took about five years to complete, therefore comes out quite fluid, which is highlighted by the original music by Lech Jankowski (who composed soundtracks for Brothers Quay, for example), in an attempt to look into the inner worlds of women – the main focus of this work, included in a trilogy on the same theme.
