In a rapid-fire montage of items produced by industrial technology (in this case circuit boards) and landscapes filled with red flowers, Jodie Mack offers a structuralist analysis that inspires new ideas and reflections. On the one hand, by exploring the shapes, colours and textures that develop in obsolete technology, the green and grey matter dotted with small chrome spheres is transformed into images whose plasticity is part of the argument of the film, prompting reflections on the end of the life cycle of objects. On the other hand, the use of images of the glory of nature, whose rather artificial effect is created by the saturated colour typical of the low-quality offset printing used for postcards, calendars and posters, now also obsolete technology, prompts other reflections based on a dispassionate view of natural beauty. This challenging interplay of contrasts is a distinctive feature of the work of director Jodie Mack, whose “Wasteland N.º1 – Ardent Verdant” marks the beginning of a new cycle and also her first appearance at Curtas.
