Sometimes together, others on their own, filmmakers Matthias Müller and Cristoph Girardet have, throughout their careers, contributed with films and installations to the programme of the festival and of Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery. This has allowed the public to follow their work practically in real time and has also won them some important awards. Just as nearly all of their films programmed until now, “Screen” suggests an approach taking two synchronous paths – on the one hand, praising the history of film by making use of carefully selected sounds and images, and, on the other hand, analysing the psychology of the viewer. The starting point for the film are images representing matter in its purest state, the elements: fire, water, earth, and air. The direction of that rhythmed sequence is based on speech, on the voices of hypnotisers which they appropriate, transposing the relationship between hypnotised subject and hypnotiser to that between the viewer and the screen.
