Shot in a school context, “Road” reached the international circuit and gained Israeli director Lapid some visibility. In fact, this is his film which more openly engages in dialogue with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, given that the plot focusses on the uprising of a group of Palestinian workers against their Israeli boss while building a highway. The narrative is particularly violent and shows how political divides are also generated by social divisions, thus throwing historic conflict into a difficult arena. “Road” begins a year after the events on which it's based, and shows a young Israeli man taking his girlfriend to visit the plaque honouring his father (the man killed by the workers). The way this trivial event is portrayed displays how Lapid is interested in looking at Israeli identity from the senselessness of the conflict. (DR)
