Born in Pakistan, Basir Mahmood collected the memories of actors, extras, writers, directors, and other figures associated with the film industry of Lahore, his hometown. Before 1977, this city had been home to one of the biggest film industries in the world, but in the years that followed it went into complete decline by only focusing on trivial creativity, intellectual decadence, and popular irrelevance, which would mark its end. The memories of that golden age were re-enacted in “All Voices Are Mine”, resulting in an exercise where two distinct temporal realities are in tension with each other. The camera now observes the recollection of a memory, and then the process of its forgetfulness. At the same time, it witnesses a recreation that ends up being subsumed into the narrative of he who does not give continuity to the reconstruction of that time – the filmmaker. This is Mahmood’s debut at Curtas Vila do Conde. His production has been split between cinema and the visual arts, and his work has been exhibited at several museums and centres of contemporary art across the globe. (PD)
