Experimental cinema has preserved an almost fetishist obsession with film history, its archaic processes and ruptures. Sixty years on, “Another Movie”, by Morgan Fisher, is a kind of tribute to “A Movie” (1958), the film by Bruce Conner considered one of the definitive works in the history of experimental cinema. Taking the same music used in Conner’s film, “Pini di Roma” (1924) by Ottorino Respighi, Fisher foregrounds the symphonic poem, presenting it in its entirety almost devoid of images, merely offering the spectator a description of the four movements which Respighi himself would have given to his audience. The only images he presents, involving the movement of the full moon, are linked to the sections of the music Conner did not use in his film. A key figure in the structural film movement and minimalist art, Fisher became a leading exponent of the “cinema of refusal”, which rejects the artificiality of montage, the camera and sound in cinema.
