Maddie Stone is a 16-year-old girl living in a small council flat in Yorkshire with her hard working and weather-beaten mother Wendy. Maddie idolises her frequently absent criminal father (who is often the talk of the town), mimicking his actions by starting a monopolistic sweet selling business at her school. Hiding behind her dad’s reputation, no other kid dares challenge Maddie’s rule on the playground. But things take a turn when he is convicted of a brutal attack and put behind bars. With Wendy finally turning her back on him after years of adultery, Maddie desperately tries to save her dad with the money she has earned put towards bail. However, with her dad locked up, the air of authority she once had at school begins to diminish as a rival sweet seller starts up, threatening to reduce her profits and take over the playground. Suddenly, a reputation that once meant something in a small town becomes a burden as Maddie begins a downward spiral, ultimately becoming the man she wants to save.
