In an intimate register between friends, Matilde Calado makes a speculative film about photographs that never existed. More than the instantaneous, the filmmaker speculates on what happens before and after the click, on what is left out of the instant that is frozen in the form of a photograph. Blurred and hazy, the images of “Photographs That I Never took” take on an imperfect side, characteristic of subjective memories that take the form of fragmented narratives and the metalanguage of the device. Something of Jonas Mekas and his “Walden: Diaries, Notes, and Sketches” (1969) echoes in this film — from a certain looseness of intimacy to the celebration of a sincerity that does not want to be lost.
