A fusion that emerges from the hypnotic percussion of musician João Pais Filipe and images shot in Super 8 by filmmaker Mónica Baptista on a trip between the Californian Death Valley desert and the United States border with Mexico near the Pacific Ocean, “Nine Doors” is a performative film whose circular narrative is essentially sensory, both in audio and visual terms. Without the viewer being consciously aware of who is driving what, the sounds and images follow on from each other at a giddying pace, culminating in a state of immersive catharsis. (PC)
