On a hot Summer afternoon, a very unattractive pool serves as a shelter to the people of the small village of Montánchez, in Extremadura, Spain. If the title of the film evokes the popular religious medieval book about the lives of the saints, of perfect lives and gold, it depicts ordinary people who are presented as ostensibly imperfect, in their most tedious daily life. They amuse themselves and transgress, with the devotion to Our Lady of the Consolation of the Castle as the backdrop. The sacred and profane constantly insinuate themselves in small notes: the apparition of the Virgin, the miracle of walking on water, biblical prophecies, satanic books, and rituals. All of this in one afternoon, in that municipal swimming pool. In a film that looks at popular culture and religiosity with humour, “Leyenda Dorada”, by Chema García Ibarra and Ion de Sosa, marks the return of Chema García Ibarra to Curtas Vila do Conde, where he already presented “Mistério” (2014) and “La Disco Resplandece” (2018).
