For the third time in Curtas, where “Jenny303” and “Aequador” also screened, Laura Huertas Millán brings “El Laberinto”, a short film which visits the house of Evaristo Porras, an ex-drug lord from the Colombian Amazon who died meanwhile. Thoroughly modelled on the American soap opera “Dynasty” (1981-1989), Porras' mansion is currently abandoned, punctuated by crumbling remains. The Colombian filmmaker combines digital images and 16mm film of both the house and adjacent areas with found footage of the above mentioned soap opera and accounts of the cartel staff about Porras' way of life. This intricate transnarrative results in a meditation regarding contemporary Colombia, a labyrinthine space which appears as an overview of centuries of colonial exploitation and decades of a narco-state oligarchy which have spoiled this territory's natural and human landscape.
