“Deux Soeurs Qui Ne Sont Pas Soeurs” is based on a screenplay by Gertrude Stein, written in 1929, at a time when Fascism was rising in Europe, a period which Gibson uses as a guide to question our times of equal political and social uncertainty. Two sisters, two pregnant women, a missing dog and Bolsonaro's recent election in Brazil set the film's tone, which explores ideas such as community, maternity, legacy and future. The result is an abstract thriller that rejects classic narrative in favour of a seemingly random editing of fragments, somewhere along the intersection of art, composition, performance, expanded cinema and literature. In a spirit of collaboration and diversity, Gibson summons a vast network of personal friends and influences – crossing genders, ethnicity, social classes, cultures, spaces and times – that come together, either by direct involvement or through the use of quotations, in a collective act of artistic expression.
