Ken Jacobs' work is one of the most important of the American avant-garde that defined an experimental cinema concept. Working since the 1950s, his work seeks to reconsider the status of moving images from iconoclastic perceptive methods, such as images manipulation (first in film, now digital) in a way to bring about a three-dimensional sensation. "The Whole Shebang" originates from a performance first presented in 1982 by the director, where he found room for improvisation: two projectors and two identical copies with varying degrees of synchronization. The film plays with limit situations – bumper cars, juggling in high buildings – creating an endless vertigo's sensation. It is, at the same time, playful and frightening. Ken Jacobs is one of the most beloved authors in Curtas Vila do Conde, having been the subject of a retrospective in 2010. (DR)
