Between Catalonia and Chile, two filmmakers share images, voices, emotions and feelings. In a filmed letter exchange between Carla Simón and Dominga Sotomayor, issues around cinema, family, and motherhood are probed in a confessional register, accompanied by joyful images of everyday life, as well as private moments. The apparent disregard for technique, and the use of homemade and amateur formats (super 8, video), as if this were a home movie, give the short film a journal aspect, reinforcing the intimate and personal realm that shapes the dialog – up until the moment the present interrupts, in a brutal way, this conversation. The film then moves towards a political sphere, violence takes over the streets of Santiago, followed by clashes between police forces and protesters, undoing past illusions of change and freedom. Both making their debut at Curtas’ main competition, Carla Simón and Dominga Sotomayor are two names on the rise in contemporary cinema. Simón had in 2017, with “Summer 1993”, one of the most praised feature debuts in recent Spanish cinema. And Sotomayor became, with “Too Late to Die Young” in 2018, the first woman to win the Best Director Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. (MD)
