Edited from excerpts of 8mm family and home movies, shot between 1937 and 1977 by Spanish families living in exile, from northern Europe to Latin America, during Franco’s dictatorship, “Exile Diaries” is Irene Gutiérrez’s pertinent reflection on the biggest collective trauma of Spain’s contemporary history. But the work by the filmmaker, making her debut at Curtas, is also of enormous documentary and historical importance, as it preserves and disseminates previously unknown images of prominent figures in the republican resistance, such as Basque communist Dolores Ibárruri, author of the celebrated “They Shall Not Pass”, Basque governor José Antonio Aguirre, Asturian socialist Indalecio Prieto, or poet Marcos Ana, among others. Cristóbal Fernández’s editing, introducing singular variations and dynamics, is also important in highlighting a non-verbal narrative, based mainly on visual and sound elements. (PC)
