“Dustin” is the debut at Curtas of recently graduated French filmmaker Naila Guiguet – and also her first short film. Guiguet set out to shoot her first professional movie using as central location the events she promotes, as a DJ and founding member of the group Collective Possession, for the LGBTQIA+ community. With the singular introduction of the mind-blowing techno music soundscape into the story, the filmmaker invites the viewer to share the sense of alienation and introspection of the characters that make up the narrative, as well as their relationship. It must be emphasized the discursive sensibility with which Guiguet makes us aware of the protagonist’s body presence and aesthetic, in contrast to her group, and to a subtly lit crowd of people, in the initial frames. Through Dustin, in the representation of the homosexual trans character that titles the film, and her group of friends, we witness the state of emotional drift and melancholy resulting from a rave. The short stands out for the current and poetic way it portrays the alternative nightlife scene, as well as for the organic representation of the process of acculturation and socialization of the depicted community.
