A couple of lovers travels down a road in the French countryside, towards the boy’s parents’ house, who will meet the girl for the first time. Suddenly, their trip is halted when they cross paths with a group of women, who show up as an army of modern and menacing amazons on horseback. The guy manages to flee, but the girl is kidnapped and made captive by this mysterious group. Soon, though, everything becomes clearer: they are simply an apparition of the runaway boy’s previous relationships, other women as ghosts of a recent past. “Blue Fear” is a provocation about the weight of former relationships in the present, an imaginative and fun hyperbole about the trepidations of a new fling, in a skillful mix that walks the fine line between dream and nightmare, built on an amalgamation of hallucinations and fragmented memories. In the movie, the past threatens the present and must be conquered, literally and figuratively. The animation marks the debut of first-time filmmaker duo Marie Jacotey and Lola Halifa-Legrand at Curtas. (JA)
