“Outsiders” – or “forasters”, in Mallorcan – is the term used by the islanders to designate mainland Spaniards who travel to Majorca. Antónia, who comes to visit her grandfather’s island and her family home, lives up to the designation, seemingly living outside the space and time of her adolescence. A lag accentuated when she finds – largely untouched – her late grandmother’s bedroom, belongings and clothes. Slowly, the girl’s body melts into the dead woman’s, making it uncertain whether it is the teenager who invokes her, or if it is the ancestor that is coming to visit. Moving through past, present and future, the movie clearly evokes the likes of Victor Erice’s “The Spirit of the Beehive” (1973) or Lucrecia Martel’s “La Ciénaga” (2001). However, “Forastera” remains a short film with deeply contemporary references, which leaves us in suspense during the protagonist’s intimate discovery, marking Lucia Aleñar Iglesias’ debut at Curtas.
