Between 1954 and 1962, the National Liberation Front led the Algerian Independence War against French colonial rule, which also involved other independence movements and originated a generational trauma for both the Algerians and the French. Through the silence of his grandfather, who was drafted to join the colonial army during the war, French filmmaker Bastien Dubois presents fragments of various narratives gathered throughout his research for a movie he’s been trying to produce for several years, with no success. “Souvenir Souvenir” is a pertinent reflection on the need for awareness and redemption regarding a violent and traumatic past that cannot remain silenced. Bastien Dubois returns to Vila do Conde, where he was awarded an honorable mention from the festival with “Madagascar Carnet de Voyage” and, under the ANIMAR program, tutored a group of students from José Régio High School in the making of “Mar à Vila”.
