Many top-tier sports these days use cameras and simulators as aids to their referees’ calls, with technology often having the final word. In tennis, the need for accuracy is particularly decisive, especially when checking if a ball has hit inside or outside court lines. “Subject to Review” offers a close look at the so-called “hawk-eye” technology, as well as at what this search for accuracy beyond the human eye means in a larger sense. In order to do this, the film traces a brief history of the techniques that preceded the modern era of image review and analysis in sports, going back to Muybridge’s zoopraxiscope – a predecessor of cinema itself. At the same time it acknowledges an undeniable aesthetic value in the technology, the movie questions the objective interpretation of reality inherent to any technological system, supposed to be accurate and impartial. Scored by Dan Deacon and produced by sports channel ESPN, “Subject to Review’ is a dense cinematic essay in its level of abstraction and its philosophical speculations, while managing to remain captivating and accessible, halfway between mainstream documentary and experimental cinema, which has become a trademark of filmmaker Theo Anthony – who makes his debut at Curtas’ competition.
