Victor is a relatively unknown young artist – mainly because he refuses to let anyone see his work – going through financial difficulties. When his landlady threatens to evict him, Victor, full of naivety and living in a permanent state of daydreaming, resorts to different schemes to make some quick money, but his plans end up frustrated, in a series of humorous sketch-like situations, skillfully staged through small visual gags. Debuting at Curtas, Brendan McHugh, who coproduced the Safdie Brothers’ “Good Times” and also worked with filmmakers Antonio Campos and Noah Baumbach, uses the legacy of a certain independent US cinema to create a tragicomic piece that comments on materialistic society in ways both scathing and sardonic. The result is a movie in which we cannot help but feel sympathy for its protagonist – however inconsequential or inglorious his struggles may seem, for he is just striving for his little slice of happiness.
