The new film by Lúcia Prancha, who has already been to Curtas in 2017 (National Competition, with “Sebastian, the Ghost”) and in 2018 (at Solar, with three integrated works in the collective exhibit “Terra”), was originally conceived as an installation for Casa do Sol, Hilda Hilst’s former residence in Campinas, Brazil. The idea was to conduct an artistic exploration of the writer’s – usually referred to as “Brazil’s Marquis de Sade” – legacy. Hilst, who passed away in 2004, amassed a literary work that stands out for its use of mysticism and eroticism in the assertion of female sexual freedom. “Casa do Sol” includes images shot around the residence, with its gardens, light, textures and sounds. The visit, in a hypnotic circular movement leading up to a final upward vertical one, starts with various photos of Hilst (taken by Fernando de Lemos and preserved in the house’s archival estate) to the sound of excerpts of her work read by Brazilian poet Júlia de Carvalho Hansen, with the purpose of enhancing the reflection on issues of sexuality and colonialism present in the political and poetic militancy of the Brazilian writer’s work.
