Laura Huertas Millán returns to Curtas, where she has previously shown “El Laberinto” (2018), “jeny303” (2018), and “Aequador” (2012), works that merge ethnographic cinema with creative processes recurrent in fictional filmmaking, in the (re)constitution of a concrete moment in time in Colombia’s contemporary history. This “Jíibie” suggests a poetic reflection on the use of cocaine, in its natural state, by Amazonian indigenous community Muita-Muruí, where the farming and use of this natural product are based on a relationship of equality between human and nature, highlighting how the latter is vital for the former’s survival. Huertas Millán goes through the different stages of this process, coming across oral testimonies about the existence of this green powder mix (referred to as “jíibie”), which profoundly distinguishes coke from its modern connotation, attributed by European colonizers who commodified an ancestral ritual into a consumer good. As reminiscent of a resistance that has survived over the centuries, Huertas Millán turns the movie into a political gesture about how we view the existence of this plant and, on a larger spectrum, how we relate to nature itself.
