Over a black screen, we hear a crying baby, a lullaby – trivial everyday moments. However, this won’t be a day like every other. Based on a true story, Pedro Peralta reenacts the life of a Spanish teacher, bunkered with her family in Castuera, near Badajoz, in 1939. Her husband is a republican on the run. Two Falangist Guards knock on the door, and the tragic fate of this night visit seems evident. Only night and silence remain, interrupted by dogs barking in the distance. A story told in three remarkable tracking shots, of admirable cinematography and “mise-en-scène”, through silences and hidden emotions that reinforce the moment’s solemnity and dignity. A political act for current times, for all times, against the silencing of memory. It is also a monument for all those to whom we owe our freedom, and who somehow prevented the night from being perpetual to us all. This is the third film by Pedro Peralta, who has already been to Curtas with “Mupepy Munatim” in 2012 (which earned a Jury Mention), and “Ascension” in 2016, at the Panorama sidebar. (MD)
