In a wonderful kingdom, where the Devil supposedly does not exist, a child wanders through a granite village. When he gets home, only death and the adults’ silence are to be found, barely mitigated by the fire’s voice and heat. He feels lonely, but only cries when wandering by himself. The visual and sound ambiences are essential in creating the telluric, ghostly and mysterious world developed from author valter hugo mãe’s homonymous work, building a tense atmosphere that gradually settles down. By decontextualizing the book’s narrative from the catholic and conservative references of Salazar’s miserly dictatorship, the movie allows the viewer to get closer to the protagonist’s universe, and be seduced by the enchanting mysteries of this imagined world’s images and sounds. “O Nosso Reino” marks the return of Luís Costa to Curtas, where he previously presented “The Everlasting Man” (2017, National Competition), “Fontelonga” (2013, Take One!), and the Super8 music video “Bearbug” (2017, codirected by Miguel da Santa).
