A hairdressing salon in Buenos Aires is the meeting point and microcosm of an emigrant community from the Dominican Republic. The music and dancing are the bonding element between regulars of all ages and backgrounds, and the sounds heard inside and outside the salon – salsa, electronic music, reggaeton, jazz – are a reflection on this cultural melting pot. Igor Dimitri, debuting at Curtas Vila do Conde’s competition, pursued his master’s in documentary cinema at Buenos Aires’ Universidad del Cine, where he returned to shoot this vibrant and sensual work, which does not ignore the imperfections and rustic look of its 16mm film, shot with an old used camera. The image grain, the enlarged scratches and dirt on the emulsion, as well as the unsynchronized sound, become expressive matter that Dimitri explores with clear aesthetical purposes. (MD)
