At a convenience store, Alexandre flips through an adult magazine, a mere ruse to distract the employee while his friends steal some candies to share later. It is a misdemeanor with no major consequences, age-appropriate even, but it indicates from the outset that Alexandre lives at his own risk. Later on, when he gets home, his mother won’t open the door for him, and this helplessness seems to be confirmed. Aimless, with no safe place to spend the night, he ends up going after his father, who works security for a prostitution joint, and this meeting will trigger a series of events that will bring them closer, while at the same time stressing the similar ways father and son adapt to and inhabit the margins of society. “Leap” marks Nuno Baltazar’s debut at Curtas, with a socially attuned work (a radio broadcast places the film during “troika” times) that elevates a relatively trivial event to something capable of altering his characters’ stories, or at least of signaling a new beginning.
