A major Hollywood star between the 1940s and 1960s, Ava Gardner (1922-1990) lived a career of many successes as well as frustrations. In 1957, after the end of her tumultuous marriage to Frank Sinatra, Gardner moves to Spain, where she had previously filmed “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman” (1951) – and where she would come to star in her last movie, “Harem” (1986). “All the Night Long” (2010) is the result of Isaki Lacuesta’s fascination with the classic Hollywood’s diva and femme fatale, in a work that the filmmaker himself dubbed a “exorcism of the lie”. An appropriation movie that puts in dialogue images of Gardner in the two films that bookend the beginning and end of her “spanish period”, this documentary essay offers a reflection on cinema and its illusory processes.
