A phone rings incessantly. On the other end, the news: the call recipient’s mother has died. Played by spanish singer Nacho Vegas, he will travel to where his mother lived, as part of a weird grieving process. In an apathetic state, he walks aimlessly, carrying the urn with the remains under his arm, and stares at people around him, with a particular interest in women and their legs: a pregnant woman sitting on a bench smoking, the customers of an ordinary cafe killing time. An observation of how a lethargic state catches hold of someone, the movie is slowly taken over by daydreams and hedonistic details, reinforcing the inevitable passage of time. Enigmatic and melancholic, “Más que a mi Suerte” (2007) is Elena López Riera’s debut film, which announces from the get-go some of her filmography’s main themes. (JA)
