Ana Maria Gomes, the Portuguese-French filmmaker returns to her roots in this documentary film, winner of the award for Best Portuguese Short Film and the Audience award for the National Competition (2016), which searches for the reasons why her uncle left Portugal for Brazil 50 years ago, never to return to his village. Her previous documentary work, video art and photography have focused on identity issues. Besides being an investigation into the whereabouts of her uncle and a somewhat romanticised character portrayal of the handsome, seductive, adventurous and accomplished accordion player, the film is also valid as a stark portrait of an impoverished, forgotten region in northern Portugal. A disappearing rural world is contrasted with the huge metropolis of Rio de Janeiro until both become interconnected through the nostalgic sounds of the accordion. (MD)
