In Odessa, Ukraine, Primorsky Boulevard’s gigantic stairway connects the city to the port since 1841. In 1925, Sergei Eisenstein immortalized these stairs on “Battleship Potemkin”’s famous scene, staging a true episode that had taken place twenty years prior. From images captured with a smartphone, as well as a Super 8 camera, João Pedro Rodrigues visits this iconic location, establishing an inevitable comparison between past and present, mediated by the cinematic apparatus, and separated by almost a hundred years of globalization and gentrification.
