Freely inspired by a true story, Georges Schwizgebel recounts the adventure of three Tierra del Fuego natives who were kidnapped in 1829 by a captain with humanist intentions and taken to London to be educated according to the principles of western civilization. In 1833, they return to their homeland, with the purpose of disseminating the teachings and benefits of western culture. One of the passengers of this trip back, in 1833, is a young man by the name of Charles Darwin. “Darwin’s Notebook” takes an insightful look at the devastating effects of colonization, in the unmistakable style of Georges Schwizgebel, with his vibrant animated paintings, in which the expression and the constant rush of the brushstrokes describe movements of great complexity and an uninterrupted metamorphosis of figures, with no editing cuts, taking the most advantage of the formal and narrative freedom made possible by animation techniques. Swiss filmmaker Georges Schwizgebel is one of the great auteurs of contemporary animation, and a regular at Curtas where he has already presented the films “Ride into the Abyss” (1992, best animation award in 1993), “Play” (2006, Onda Curta award in 2007), and “On the Way” (2012), among others. In 2013, Schwizgebel was part of the International Competition jury, having also taught a masterclass and presented some of his movies on the occasion. (MD)
