Juliette Klinke invites the viewer to discover images forgotten by history, and by those who write it, making it endure the test of time. The short film “In the silence of an abyssal sea” was made from fragments of movies produced by women, found during her research for a feature that will tell one of these many stories. The director starts this investigation motivated by her involvement with the Elles Font Des Films collective, a group of Belgian filmmakers intent on creating a place of visibility for the history of women in film. Wandering through the silences of these images, Juliette Klinke’s urgency in establishing their endurance in time and in the present arena becomes evident. We see images that were not part of what molded our sensibilities, our gaze. We reflect on a sea of images easy to lose track of, due to their fragmented and precarious state, their themes, or subjects that did not have a place or a voice that reverberated in time. We question ourselves about the status of other images: what remained and remains to be seen? What is our role in making this history? (BC)
