Filmed from the director’s window during the 2020 lockdown, “Citadel” confronts the viewer with images of London’s financial district buildings to the sound of snippets from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s speeches, addressing the nation about the pandemic with his well-known rhetoric. John Smith, known for movies punctuated by incisive and biting commentary on the world made from his house, portrays now, with the help of dramatic lighting changes, the real citadel, the great center of power that, as we might already suspect, is no longer political, but financial. While Johnson utters atrocities regarding the virus, the financial elite remains untouched in their gigantic buildings, true monuments to capitalism. “Citadel” could be a dystopian fiction, and the language Smith resorts to is one of constant subversion of the boundaries between representation and abstraction, between the grotesque and the pictorial representation of the landscape, but it is all way too real.
