Choosing FIFA international referee Fedayi San as his protagonist, director Roman Hodel presents us a football match as we rarely see it, in the sense that, counter to expectations, the ball and the players are no longer the center of attention. In just a few minutes, and at a breakneck pace made possible by an excellent work of sound design and editing, which recreate the tension of the game, the viewer is presented with a humanizing and intimate look at the intense pressure a referee is subjected to throughout a Swiss professional league football match (Young Boys vs Lugano). During the game, in addition to enforcing the rules, he deals with the players’ behavior, with the noise and complaints from fans, and with any event that might happen within and outside the field, in permanent dialogue with his assistants and with the VAR technology. This is a portrait that brings to the fore the singularity of the referee as a human being, with his expectations, doubts, and concerns. (MD)
