On a Greek island, Nina travels by car with her mother and her friend Spiro. They are going to her grandparents' house for a family reunion. During the trip, the silence between the daughter and the mother reveals a discomfort and an emotional distance that Spiro tries to ease with some jokes and moments of leisure. Gradually, as they revisit places where they have been happy, mother and daughter gradually come closer. As with the poem “I’m listening” by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, “If What I Hear Is Silence” calls for an intimate look at the importance of listening to silence in emotional relationships, of feeling and interpreting non-verbal communication such as gestures and looks.
