On a winter night, followed by her overtly drunk husband, a woman storms out of a masked ball at a mansion in the middle of the woods. On the car ride back home, an argument ends in an accident. When the man comes to, he notices his wife is missing. Panicked, in the middle of the night, feeling guilty, he decides to return to the party and ask for help. Only, once he gets there, everything seems different, as if he had entered a dream. And his anguish grows when he sees his wife with a bird headed man. Is it all real or is it a nightmare in which his repressed ghosts and fantasies come true? “The Night Watch” is an aesthetically flawless animation, in a realistic black-and-white style that resembles the language of classic cinema. A singular incursion by Julien Regnard, who has already been to Curtas in 2014, into fantastic cinema, and a trip between reality and dream through the labyrinths of jealousy, sex, desire, and fantasy.
