This is a film whose protagonists are a young Iranian couple, but it is not a conjugal film, nor a love story. It is not about the loss of virginity, but rather a journey, a symbolic journey that lays bare the multiple social, political, religious, and ethical constraints of a densely claustrophobic society. It is a documentary-style look at a problematic crystallized in the austere contemporary Iranian society. According to Ali Asgari’s words, the plot of this short film starts from a true story and both the script and the shooting were completed in an incredibly short time: three weeks for writing and three nights for shooting. But let’s return to the couple who, during the night, desperately seek to see the care of the girl who is suffering from heavy bleeding following her first sexual intercourse. We then see them, in a crescendo of anguish, being successively refused for having committed several infractions in this simple act: one of them was for not being married; another for not having any consent from the girl’s parents; yet another for having lied about the cause of the haemorrhage. If for the girl in the film the medical intervention that took place in a clandestine clinic would totally change the course of her life, this solution found on the black market ended up having irreparable consequences also for the couple’s future. “More Than Two Hours” will be revisited by Asgari in 2017 for the making of his feature film entitled “Desappearance”.
