Matilde is a kid who plays on a farm, while imagining to be somewhere else. In her world, everything is perfect just like in the movies, and that is why she puts on makeup, paints her nails, and dresses eccentrically for playing. She also has an imaginary command that disables all the traps that come up as obstacles. Her cousin, her mom, and her grandmother also live on the farm. Matilde feels lost and alone, having no one to play with, as the adults have their own issues to worry about. Matilde does not understand them, nor their problems. “Matilde olha para trás” is a careful and sensitive look at childhood and its importance as a way of transforming the world, but it is also a story about loneliness and incomprehension. This is Ana Mariz’s second film as a director and her debut at Curtas. (PC)
