Also including a site-specific installation in Deryneia, Cyprus, “Inside the Outset: Evoking a Space of Passage” is part of a project by artist Rosa Barba, who returns to Curtas, where she has already won twice the Experimental Competition Grand Prix (“Bending to Earth”, in 2016, and “From Source to Poem”, in 2017). Here, Barba continues the cartographic effort from her previous works, identifying and exploring the many transformations (visual, sound, material) imposed by humans on natural elements, both on surface and seafloor level, in a territory artificially divided by centuries of religious and ideological clashes. Also resorting to archival footage, Barba decomposes the several layers of the landscape, exploring its visual and sound textures, proposing a pertinent reflection on the possibilities of cinema in the reinvention of landscapes.
