In Glasgow, in 1973, a strike by the garbage collectors' union reveals the enormous poverty that plagued the city, making clear the decaying living conditions to which the inhabitants were subjected. Lynne Ramsay's first feature film is a tender yet sharp look at the members of a family at the center of the social turmoil who, in their own way, were just trying to survive. These people are like ghosts of their own lives, with no prospects for the future. They survive on the fringes of society, amid drugs, violence and decaying houses, waiting for some kind of redemption, which gradually becomes something so far-off that ends up being forgotten. (JA)
