Amidst half-whispered words and a series of archival footage, both hers and her family’s, “Will this pain ever settle down?” is a love letter from the filmmaker to her cousin and goddaughter, born nine years after the death of their grandmother, so that the little girl will not forget this grandma she never met in person. It is a letter filled with sorrow, pain, and grief for the grandmother’s death, but also with the joy of affections preserved by memory. Marisa Alves Pedro starts with a question, but her letter is full of certainties. It is also a celebration of cinema as a possibility to fill in the memory gaps, to keep feelings and emotions alive beyond time, but above all to help ease the pain. (PC)
